Assessing Your Loft's Full Potential

Some roof spaces are more easily converted than others and a full assessment requires professional help. But the untrained eye can often work out the basics. Go up into your loft space and take a look around. Is there enough headroom at the centre under the ridge? You ideally need 8ft (2.4m) clearance, although you may find that you can still get a useful room from as little as 7ft (2.1m). A quick check with a tape measure will suffice.

Traditional, pre 1965, rafter and purlin roof construction: This style of roof is ideal for loft conversions because it has a reasonably steep pitch.

Modern, post 1965, trussed rafter construction. Used widely in houses in Britain since 1965, this style usually has a shallow pitch and more struts. If needed, the height can be increased to accommodate a loft conversion.

Free feasibility study
After your initial contact with us to discuss your loft conversion, we will arrange a date for your FREE feasibility study. Our surveyor will do a full architectural review of your property and discuss with you exactly what it is you require, and how to make the most of the space available. We can then discuss the feasibility of your ideas and develop a design. A costing will then be prepared which will stay the same throughout the project.

Planning stage
Mainpride Loft Conversions will produce the required architectural drawings required for local authority planning permissions and building regulations. Mainpride Loft Conversions will take care of all liaison with the local authorities throughout the project.

Rest assured, Mainpride Loft Conversions will prepare plans and structural calculations on your behalf and obtain building regulation approval and also planning permission when required.

Our own Site Managers, as well as your Local Authority Surveyor, who makes regular site visits.

Can I see a recently completed conversion?

Certainly, it will be a pleasure to show you a recent conversion at the home of one of our many satisfied customers.

How quickly can work commence?

Generally within two months of receipt of all necessary Local Authority approvals.

With a typical loft conversion, do I need to change my existing doors to fire doors?

No, if the current doors meet the latest Local Authority Building Control guidelines ie: they are 32mm thick, then all you need to do is install smoke alarms in all habital rooms and a heat detector in the kitchen.

Do I need planning permission?

As long as you are not in a conservation area, you can have an extension on the rear or side of the house without planning permission. This should not exceed 50 cubic metres.

Velux roof lights can be added to the front, rear and side without planning permission. As long as you are not in a conservation area. However Dorma windows are not permitted on the front or principal elevation of the house without planning permission. Solar panels can be used on any roof elevation without restriction.

Will I save money on my fuel bills if I get solar panels installed?

Absolutely
